June Letter From the Editor: Breaking Beauty Rules

Some rules apply for a reason - for safety, health, to make sure you do not stay up all night watching TRL reruns as a child. Others, as the saying goes, are meant to be broken. The world of beauty, in particular, feels more trend-agnostic on the day where it is less about fitting into a particular mold determined by some of the chosen people and more about celebrating self-expression in all shapes and sizes (well, at least we until there). The traditional "beauty" rules are broken every day - and it's time. Who says you can only wear certain lipstick nuances for your skin tone? Who says three Asian women can not be on the cover of the American beauty magazine or that color models can not be vocal about how the industry they do can do better ? Who says what you can or can not do beauty at all, really? Of course not us. June Letter From the Editor: Breaking Beauty Rules

This month, we celebrate violators of the rules of beauty -individuals who look beyond the limits of traditional beauty guidelines, acknowledge them, and then boldly step out of the line, inspire the rest of us to do the same in the process (see you, Sacha Lane). We will also equip the brand of beauty of our favorite favorite offenders, from the birthline in Instagram for the sustainable skincare line up to the feminine-hygiene brands that disrupt the industry in desperate need of a new perspective. We will also present a series for men and makeup (what, do you think Zac Efron's skin looks without natural pores?) In order to normalize the whole conversation. Some men wear makeup; some are not. Can we agree one is no more "normal" than the other? (And for men who wear make-up - we'll take your basic recommendations whenever you're ready.) June Letter From the Editor: Breaking Beauty Rules

Last but certainly not least, in honor of LGBTQ + month, we handed the mic to some of our favorite strange celebrities, influencers, and activists to share a record of beauty for their younger self -some funny, partly heartbreaking, and all remind us that self-love is a beauty rule that we all should play. June Letter From the Editor: Breaking Beauty Rules

Rule breaker or not, let's step outside the line of this month and so on. I'm queuing up for TRL reruns.
