Secondhand marijuana smoke and kids

Over the years, we have been talking about the danger to children from secondhand smoke . This makes asthma worse, increases the risk of respiratory and ear infections - and even increases the risk of sudden death in infants. We have all types of educational campaigns for parents and carers, and have made some progress: between 2002 and 2015, smoking among parents children younger than 18 years down from 27.6% to 20 , 2%. But now there is a new problem: secondhand smoke. Secondhand marijuana smoke and kids

Studies show that when you are around someone who smokes marijuana, smoke enters into your system as well. How much you get depends on how close the person is, how many people are smoking and how much, how long you spend near them, and how much ventilation is in the room. But his research is clear that cannabinoids, the chemicals that cause "high," go into the bodies of the people closest - including children. Secondhand marijuana smoke and kids

During the same time period that smoking around children fell by more than 7%, smoking marijuana around children rose by almost 5%. As more and more countries legalize marijuana for recreational use, that number is likely to continue to rise.

This is not good. In addition to the fact that we do not want children to be tall, or exposed to the smoke of cannabis smoke inhaled, there is additional concern about the long-term effects on the brain. While there is evidence to suggest that when adolescents and young adults (whose brain is still developing) are exposed to cannabis, it may have a permanent effect on the executive function memory, and even IQ.

This is not what we want for our children.

All the advice we give to parents who smoke tobacco applies to parents who smoke cannabis, including:

  • It's best for you and your child not to smoke at all. Talk to your doctor about how to stop.
  • If you smoke, do not smoke around your child.
  • Even if your child is not around, do not smoke somewhere, like your house or car. The smoke is alive.
  • After smoking, change clothes and wash. Again: the smoke is alive.

Since the usage of marijuana is increasingly common law, we need to make the same rules and laws as we make to protect people from secondhand tobacco smoke.

Just because something is legal does not mean safe. And when we make risky choices, it is unfair to impose risk on others - especially children, and especially when they can actually be harmed for the rest of their lives. Secondhand marijuana smoke and kids
